There's an old friend on my computer that I just realized is going to help me get all my favorite music from my CD collection onto my PSP. It's the Musicmatch Jukebox and even the free version will convert my CDs to MP3s which I can then download onto my PSP.
There are several different ways to download PSP music. The trick is to convert the music files into an acceptable PSP format. The PSP will accept MP3, MP4, WAV, ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus formats. However, if you want to make it simple and cheap or if you just want to get some of your favorite tunes on your PSP, you can upload your CDs to the Musicmatch Jukebox, pick out your favorite tracks and convert these to MP3 files. Once you do this, you can plug your PSP into the USB port on your PC with the Memory Stick plugged into your PSP and Voila!

Without going to very much trouble and literally no expense you can have your favorite tunes on your PSP. Sony plans to release the new 4GB PRO Duo Memory Stick in July 2006 at a retail price of about $250. With this much room, you 'll be able to store hundreds of songs on your PSP along with some video content as well, yet the video content takes up a lot more room than music does.
You can also find online sites where you can download PSP music that is already in its proper format or, if not, convertible to the format you need. You can do a search for free audio converters or buy one as almost any music you download is going to be convertible to the PSP in one form or another.
Of course, one of the biggest hurdles to cross before you can download PSP music in some formats is the Digital Rights Management (DRM) issue. That is an entirely different thesis project but suffice it to say that it's an ongoing legal issue about copying music and DVDs, even the ones you own just so you can play them on another device. If you are much of a gadget or music or video fan, you already know about this and have probably found a way around it.
iTunes and Walmart.com downloads are DRM encrypted which means you can't download them from your computer to your PSP. Not unless you have software that removes DRM.
You're bound to get an education if nothing else when you attempt to download PSP music. There are plenty of forums and online sites with gurus that can tell you how to get around anything but ultimately it is your responsibility to obey the download laws. Fortunately, there are enough legal ways to download PSP music that one need not resort to anything illegal.
